Hygrophorus caespitosus (Murr.) Murr. syn. Camarophyllus caespitosus Murr. Cap 1-6cm across, convex with the disc flattened, then much flatter with a deeply depressed disc and spreading or upturned margin; creamy yellow to pale buff, sometimes bright yellow and small, dark yellow or brownish scales all over the cap; surface moist then dry. Gills broadly adnate-decurrent, subdistant to distant, broad; white to yellowish. Stem 20-50 x 3-l0mm, spongy becoming hollow, often tapering slightly toward the base; same color as cap or darker; smooth and moist or dry. Flesh thick; yellow. Odor not distinctive. Taste mild or slightly of raw potato. Spores ellipsoid, nonamyloid, 6.5-10 x 4-7µ. Deposit white. Habitat in small groups or dense tufts on mossy soil in coniferous or deciduous woods and on clay banks. Uncommon. Found in eastern North America. Season June-August. Edibility not known. |
